Schuitema has approximately 100 supermarkets and provides goods and services to close to 400 independent and associated food retailers mainly operating under the trade name C1000.

Situation: Distribution is of vital importance to the food industry. A formula as fast growing as C1000 places even greater demands on its logistics facilities. Schuitema steps up to meet this challenge on a daily basis. Logistics is seen as an additional means to strengthen C1000’s position in the market (lower consumer cost prices and higher on-shelf availability). It is for this reason that Schuitema is continually looking for ways to improve their logistics.

Solution: RFID enables users to automatically identify load carriers or products with the aid of radio signals. Schuitema and Capgemini started a joint study to investigate where and how RFID technology can be deployed successfully in the logistics process. Capgemini has developed a methodology specifically for this type of study, whereby different solution scenarios can be evaluated in an innovative way. The most favorable scenario is detailed out and tested for technical and financial feasibility. The technical feasibility is tested in a production environment while the financial feasibility is verified against the Capgemini business case model.

Result: The advantage of this approach is that the viability of a solution in a specific situation can be determined in a short period of time and with a high degree of certainty. An additional advantage is the creation of a business case that can be easily modified to accommodate changing market conditions.
